What to do in Calgary on Family Day

While some city facilities are closed today for the holiday, others are promising a day of winter fun for Calgary families.

Fort Calgary is hosting a free Winter Carnival, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. MT.

Activities will include carnival games, crafts, a treasure hunt, face painting, plus theatre plays, cartoons and movies in the Burnswest theatre.

There will also be maple-syrup candy making if the weather permits. But officials are asking parents to leave strollers at home, as they expect a large crowd.

The Calgary Zoo is open today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Devonian Gardens are open from noon until 5 p.m.

But the North Mount Pleasant and Wildflower Arts Centres and the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary will be closed for the holiday.

Parents are being challenged to take on their kids in six hands-on tasks where families can discover whether there really is a generation gap.

The event has been running all weekend from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The day offers other activities like building and racing your own car at the Zippy Nippy Races, or busting out your inner soap star to create a Radio Play.

For more information, visit the park's website at heritagepark.ca.

There is also public skating available at the Olympic Oval today from noon to 4 p.m.

Admission is free with a donation of a non-perishable food to the Calgary Food Bank. The event is also fundraising for Olympic Oval programs through a silent auction.

There will also be family-fun activities like bouncy castles and face painting.

Free parking is available on the north side of the Oval in Parking Lots 9, 16, 10, 11, 12 and 13.

All arenas around the city are closed for Family Day, but the city is offering free public skating at select facilities from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. today.

Also, C-Train service will be affected until Monday night between the 39th Avenue and Heritage stations as crews conduct maintenance work.

The city's administration offices will be closed for the holiday, but waste and recycling services — as well as collection at community recycling depots — will not be affected.

The Spyhill Landfill and Shepard Landfill are closed today, but the East Calgary Landfill is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
