Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi ponders Grey Cup bet dilemma

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi is going to the Grey Cup in Vancouver this weekend to watch the Stampeders take on the Hamilton Tiger Cats.

But Nenshi has a bit of a dilemma.

"Hamilton got a new mayor elected on the 27th of October, but he's not sworn in yet," he said.

"So do I make the bet with the old mayor or the new mayor. If I make it with the old mayor it means his last official act will be paying off a bet to me. I don't know if that's right or fair."

Couns. Jim Stevenson and Joe Magliocca will be at the game as well, but Hamilton likely won't have a mayor to represent it this weekend in Vancouver as the Tiger-Cats take their second trip to the Grey Cup in two years.

The last day of Mayor Bob Bratina’s term is Nov. 30, the same day as the Grey Cup. Bratina is not planning to make the trip to Vancouver, and mayor-elect Fred Eisenberger is on vacation.

Edmonton bet pays off

Nenshi's friendly wager with Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson over the weekend will see 100 pounds of food donated in Calgary.

The mayors entered into the wager ahead of the CFL Western Division final that saw the Calgary Stampeders beat the Edmonton Eskimos 43-18 on Sunday.

The win capped a stellar season for the Stamps after they matched the franchise's best record of 15-3.

Calgary last claimed the Grey Cup in John Hufnagel's first year as head coach and GM in 2008.
