Calgary news, weather and traffic for Feb. 10

Good morning, Calgary! It's mainly clear and –2 C at the airport at 8 a.m. Here's what's happening in the city today.

Weather

We broke a 90-year-old record yesterday with a high of 16.4 C in Calgary, beating the old record of 14.4 C recorded in 1926. Today, we likely won't reach record-breaking territory, but it still should be a mild one for the second week of February.

We're expecting a cloudy high of 8 C today with the wind out of the southwest at 15 km/h. Overnight, the wind will pick up and the temperature is expected to hold steady at around 5 C.

Tomorrow, we should see sunshine and a high of 10 C.

News headlines

The Calgary police officer who shot and killed Anthony Heffernan in a motel room last year — and has not yet been cleared of wrongdoing — was also involved in the shooting death of another man, according to CBC sources. The officer was one of three to fatally shoot Dave McQueen on Jan. 25, a man in a wheelchair who engaged in a shootout with police. Less than a year before, that same officer shot Anthony Heffernan four times — including three to the head, according to family — killing him in a hotel room in March 2015. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has completed its investigation into the killing, according to the Heffernan family's lawyer, and handed its findings over to the Alberta Crown to determine if the officer will be charged criminally. Police and ASIRT would not comment on the matter.

Despite missing two-thirds of their top line, the Calgary Flames picked up a 4-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Saddledome last night. Flames forwards Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau and Lance Bouma did not play, after being scratched from the lineup for disciplinary reasons. The Flames are now seven points out of a wild card spot in the NHL's Western Conference. They are eight points back of Anaheim, which occupies third place in the Pacific Division.
