News headlines

Here's what the CBC Calgary newsroom is working on this morning:

Fee hikes and tax increases are the story in this year's provincial budget, which was delivered by Finance Minister Robin Campbell in the Legislature yesterday. Gasoline, tobacco and alcohol taxes will rise, user fees for many government services are going up, and a new health-care levy is set to be introduced. Alberta's tax structure will also change, with people earning over $100,000 a year paying slightly higher taxes (from 10% to 11.5% by 2019.) You can find a full breakdown of the budget here.

Fire investigators are on the scene of a house explosion this morning. It happened around 2 a.m. in the Rundle neighbourhood, in the 2300 block of 50th Street N.E. Two homes were damaged but there were no injuries.

Calgary Transit is pitching the idea of late-night transit service for Calgarians who go out on Friday and Saturday nights. They're looking to operate buses along the C-Train line between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. in order to supplement cab companies that, according to Calgary Transit, are unable to meet the late-night demand. The plan goes in front of the taxi and limousine committee later today.
