News headlines

Calgary city council unanimously approved a new initiative that will allow those living well below the poverty line to get a bus pass for just over $5 per month. The sliding scale will mean those living in extreme poverty, making approximately $12,000 or less per year, will be able to get a Calgary Transit pass for $5.15. That's a steep discount from the $44 per month for a current subsidized pass. The price rises with income until a user exceeds the poverty line.

Yesterday, city council also rejected the idea of holding a plebiscite on the issue of secondary suites during the 2017 municipal election. Council will continue to deal with secondary suites on a case-by-case basis. Coun. Shane Keating noted yesterday that there will be 39 applications waiting for council when they return in September.

Calgary-based Husky Energy is apologizing for an oil spill into the North Saskatchewan river. Husky estimates 200 to 250 cubic meters of oil were spilled into the river. Husky is paying for the cleanup efforts. In addition, it has said it will help communities that are incurring costs to secure their water supplies. Saskatchewan's minister of government relations says the situation is still volatile and it's unclear how long clean up will take and what the impact is on communities like Prince Albert and North Battleford.
