Calgary news, weather and traffic for June 30

Good morning Calgary! It's a humid start to the day, with mist and a temperature of 16 C reported at the airport at 8 a.m. Here's what's happening in Calgary today.

Weather

We saw showers and thundershowers overnight, and there's a chance that we'll see more of the same today. Environment Canada is calling for mostly cloudy conditions and a high of 22 C today. There's a 30 per cent chance of showers early this morning and a 60 per cent chance of showers late this afternoon, potentially turning into thunderstorms around 3 p.m.

It's a similar forecast for Canada Day, with a 30 per cent chance of showers and a high of 21 C expected.

Just a reminder to keep your headlights on this morning, as we're hearing reports of fog patches in low-lying areas throughout the city, particularly in the southwest.

A high profile Calgary imam has been stripped of his refugee status in Canada. Abdi Hersy is currently wanted in the United States on outstanding sexual assault charges which date back to 2006. Despite the charges, Hersy was granted protected status as a Somali refugee — a protection that has now been revoked. Hersy's lawyer says that he plans to appeal the ruling.

If you use e-cigarettes, take note: Calgary city council has passed a bylaw to ban vaping in the same public places where smoking tobacco is not allowed. The new bylaw takes effect immediately. There is one exemption in the bylaw, as you will still be allowed to use your e-cigarettes in dedicated vape shops.
