News headlines

City planners have rejected the Calgary Drop-In Centre's controversial proposal to turn a northeast hotel into an affordable housing complex. The site, at the corner of Edmonton Trail and McKnight Boulevard, was once a Quality Inn. The Drop-In bought it in 2012 intending to turn it into a transitional housing facility, but the plan has faced strong criticism from community members since it was unveiled. Earlier this year, it submitted a revised plan with fewer units for the centre, but the Calgary Planning Commission voted that idea down on Thursday. The Drop-In Centre plans to appeal the decision.

CBC News has learned that Calgary's latest homicide victim had connections to organized crime and a criminal history in Manitoba. 31 year old Joel Geddes was shot to death outside a home in the Evergreen neighbourhood Wednesday night. Police believe that it was a targeted attack.
