Calgary news, weather and traffic for Sept. 8

Good morning Calgary! It's sunny and 9 C at 8:30 a.m. Here's what's happening in the city today.

Weather

September will begin quite nicely with sunshine and a high of 22 C expected today. The wind will come out of the southwest at 20 km/h gusting to 40 km/h. The temperature will drop as the week progresses, with a high of 19 C expected tomorrow and a high of only 10 C in the forecast for Thursday.

We have wind warnings in effect for the southwest corner of the province this morning — if you're in Pincher Creek, Cardston, or the Crowsnest Pass areas be aware that there may be strong winds gusting up to 100 km/h today.

Calgary-based oil and gas company Penn West Petroleum is cutting 400 full-time employees and contractors. They're also suspending their dividend and reducing compensation for executives. There have been significant job losses in the last two years at Penn West, with the workforce dropping from 2,350 employees in June 2013 to fewer than 1,000 today. The company has also faced legal challenges from investors after accounting irregularities were discovered last year.

The former Liberal candidate for the federal riding of Calgary Nose Hill is speaking out. Twenty one year old Ali Buzreba dropped out of the race two weeks ago after a series of offensive tweets she had written as a 16-year-old were discovered. In an exclusive interview with CBC News, she says she regrets the tweets, but says they were a teenager's response to online bullying.
