News headlines

Here's what the CBC Calgary newsroom is working on this morning:

Albertans have elected a new premier. The Alberta NDP, led by Rachel Notley, won Alberta's 29th provincial election in convincing fashion last night, winning a majority that many would have considered unthinkable just four weeks ago when the election was called. The NDP won 53 seats, while the Wildrose led by Brian Jean will form the official opposition with 21 seats. The PC party won only 10 seats, relegating it to third place status. In her victory speech, Notley promised "new people, new ideas and a fresh start" for Alberta.

After the results were tallied, Jim Prentice told supporters that he is stepping down as leader of the PC party. Despite winning his seat in Calgary-Foothills, he announced that he plans to "leave public life immediately."

You can find full election results — including what happened in your riding — by visiting our Alberta Votes website.

And if the drama at the polling station wasn't enough for you... how about the drama at the Saddledome last night? Johnny Gaudreau scored a game-tying goal with less than 20 seconds left in regulation, and Mikael Backlund potted the overtime winner as the Flames beat the Ducks by a score of 4–3 last night. The Ducks now lead the second-round series 2–1. The Flames will look to repeat their winning ways and tie up the series in Game 4 on Friday night here in Calgary.
