Calgary police shut down Marlborough Park drug den

Police and other agencies say they have temporarily shut down a drug den in northeast Calgary.

Officials with Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) and the Calgary Police Service were tipped off last fall after receiving several complaints from the community about drug trafficking at the home in Marlborough Park.

During their investigation, police say they were called to the home along Malvern Court a total of 27 times — including three calls about suspected overdose deaths.

"You need as a community to know that when something like this starts to happen that there is a resource that you can go to that can investigate and make sure that it doesn't grow," said Mary Ryan, president of the Marlborough Park Block Watch.

A search of the home last December found heroin, drug paraphernalia and stolen property.

Insp. Mike Letourneau with Safer Communities and Neighbourhood — known as SCAN — told reporters the house was trashed.

"You can't step anywhere in this house without on stepping on either glass, garbage or needles," he said.

Tenant barred from home

The home has now been closed through a court order, which will last for 90 days, and the tenant is barred from entering or occupying the property.

The locks are changed, windows and doors have been boarded up, and the property fenced.

Last year, the SCAN received more than 400 complaints about properties around Alberta.

Members investigate issues around prostitution, gangs, drug use and drug trafficking.
