Calgary Transit eyes late night weekend service for downtown party crowd
Calgary Transit wants to make it easier for partiers to get home from the downtown core after midnight on weekends.
Transit planner AsifKurji says the plan is to operate busses along the four LRT routes and Centre Street beginning at 1 a.m.
“The five routes will take customers out of the downtown and the Beltline to proposed taxi hubs until about 3 a.m.,” he said.
The buses would serve the downtown core and the entertainment district on 17th Avenue southwest.
Kurji says the Taxi and Limousine Advisory Committee asked Calgary Transit to look into late night bus service to help ease the crunch.
“There is the equivalent of the Saddledome that dumps out downtown at approximately 2 a.m.,” he said.
The interval between busses would be about half an hour and Kurji says taxis would be encouraged to wait for customers at the last stop on the routes.
The plan goes in front of the taxi and limousine advisory committee on Friday.
