Calgary's Protospace creative space sees swell in membership, doubles in size

Calgary's community of creative geeks is growing.

Protospace is a place for artists, inventors and programmers to access a warehouse space and share tools, equipment and ideas for a small membership fee.

"Anything that you could possibly want to make, it all works here," says Jamie Frost, one of the volunteer directors.

Protospace has seen such a swell in interest, its space at 1530 27 Ave. N.E. is taking the bay next door to double in size.

Special effects technician David Bynoe is known for his animal-themed creations: an electric goose, complete with sound effects and a ride-on beaver.

Access to members with various skills and knowledge is one of Protospace's best qualities, according to Bynoe.

"It allows you to take on bigger and scarier projects because, you know, there's going to be someone who's there who can help you out," says Bynoe.

Protospace currently has about 140 members. It's open to the public every Tuesday for a 'Meet and Geek.'
