Call of Duty Black Ops 4, including Zombies, is released on 12 October for PS4, Xbox One and PC

Call of Duty’s co-operative mode Zombies returns in Call of Duty Black Ops 4 and it looks to be the meatiest offering of the mode yet.

There are three maps at launch across two distinct storylines. The Titanic-based Voyage of Despair and Roman colosseum-set IX make up the new ‘Chaos’ storyline, starring four new characters in Scarlett, Stanton, Diego and Bruno.

While there is also ‘Blood of the Dead’ a remake of Black Ops 2 map ‘Mob of the Dead’ starring original cast Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo and Richtofen.

According to developer Treyarch’s co-studio head Jason Blundell, Call of Duty Black Ops 4’s mode is the ‘most personal and customisable Zombies experience made to date’. With that in mind, we spoke to Blundell about his tips for getting the most out of the mode and surviving the horde.

Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Set up your Zombies character

I would say the first thing to do is spend time in character set-up. Whether you are playing the Aether story or the new Chaos story you can now choose your perks and assign them to the different machines and statues in the world. You can also select your starting weapon, special equipment and Wonder Weapon. So spend time in the menus and make sure you are nicely set up before taking on the undead.

What is the best way to survive in IX?

Keep away from the zombies, they are very hungry. That’s my first tip. Keep moving. Moving is a good way to stay alive. It’s not just a recommendation for the game, it’s a good direction in life aswell.

And how about Voyage of Despair?

My pro-tip would be that we are accurate with Voyage of Despair to the Titanic; so the recreation of the halls and the rooms are all there. Turns out that ships are normally made with quite narrow corridors, so don’t spend too much time in the interior. Engine room is a good place. Front and back of the ship are good places. But keep out of narrow corridors. Watch out, the zombies swarm.

What are your top dev tips for surviving the horde?

If you are playing solo, I definitely recommend switching bots on, which are new for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and they all help you and you can play further. But everything is always better with friends. That speaks to the principle behind all of Black Ops 4, it’s the most sociable and connected game we’ve ever made. So jumping in with your friends is always a recipe for success.
