Call of Duty: Warzone’s Haunting of Verdansk is a horror movie battle royale

Call of Duty: Warzone announced The Haunting of Verdansk event in celebration of Halloween.

The event’s trailer features a significantly darker take on Warzone’s iconic map filled with zombies, a creepy cover of “Black Hole Sun” by Nouela and even horror icons Leatherface (from “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”) and Billy the Puppet (from “Saw”).

In the event’s storyline, a squad of operators are sent to Verdansk to investigate reports of strange laughter and a serial killer who collects the faces of his victims. The squad is brutally murdered except for a sole survivor who is seeking revenge.

The Haunting of Verdansk introduces new modes like Going Dark, which is only available on certain queues such as Trios. In Going Dark, players navigate a nighttime version of Verdansk filled with jump scares and creepy new encounters to discover.

There’s also the Zombie Royale mode, where slain players will return as Zombies rather than being sent to the respawn gulag. Zombies can’t use weapons but they’re faster, hit harder, jump higher and have a few other tricks up their sleeve to close the gap with mortal soldiers.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is also getting some new modes as well. Onslaught has teams racing to secure a Juggernaut suit to reach a specific waypoint on the map, while Snipers Only is a game mode that, naturally, only allows sniper rifles to be used.

Aside from that, there’s a Trick-or-Treat scavenger hunt for new cosmetics and blueprints, a new weapon (the JAK-12 shotgun) and some new skins (yep, you can play as Billy or Leatherface).

Just don’t forget to look behind you.

The Haunting of Verdansk event will run from Oct. 20 to Nov. 3. Call of Duty: Warzone is available for free on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
