Cambridge Times Welcomes LJI Reporter, Genelle Levy

·2 min read

I’m excited to join the Cambridge Times team as a Local Journalism Initiative reporter, and to shed light on the issues affecting Cambridge residents. Previously as a freelance journalist, I reported on topics such as barriers to accessing health care in communities of colour and the lack of cosmetic makeup options for Black people.

I have a sincere love for local reporting. I started my career in local reporting in Syracuse, New York, at Syracuse New Times, covering arts, culture and community initiatives, before completing a stint as assistant editor at Blouin Media in New York City.

I’m a proud alumni of Syracuse University and the University of Toronto where I attained my Master’s in Journalism and Bachelor’s degree in English Literature respectively. At Syracuse, I awakened my love of local reporting by covering everything from community transit projects to local theatre and everyday locals making a difference in their community. The very first story I ever reported on was an awards ceremony for local labour union activists.

I’m an avid traveller, and so far my work has taken me from Charleston, South Carolina, to New York, Toronto, and my hometown Burlington, Ontario. Throughout my career I’ve covered art, culture and community. However, my main passion is covering issues related to social inequality and identity.

Outside of work, I’m a bookworm who spends most of my time trying out decadent recipes in my kitchen. When I’m not cycling around Waterloo region, you can find me bingeing far-fetched television dramas. And of course, I also spend a lot of time reading local news and magazines.

As a reporter, I want to tackle the barriers that intersect with identity, as well as focus on local heroes who are determined to make a difference. As a reporter I want to know what difficulties you face living in Cambridge, what are the challenges, what do you like and what do you not like. I believe that good journalism should represent the voices of a community, and I’m proud to be able to represent your voice.
