The Idea Exchange might not be descriptive enough for a public library, so the Cambridge Public Library (CPL) board is making a change.

After 10 years as Idea Exchange, Cambridge Public Library will be the new, more identifiable handle. It comes after thoughtful consideration of community feedback.

CEO Chrissy Hodgins said that much of her time in the role has been focused on the institution's relationship with the community. She said it revealed that some people weren't sure of what exactly the Idea Exchange was.

"It became clear that returning to a name that included 'public library' was the right choice for our community," she said in a release on the Idea Exchange website.

In an effort to create their new strategic plan, CPL sent out a community survey where an "overwhelming majority" of respondents said the Idea Exchange moniker created a barrier to access for current residents of Cambridge and newcomers alike.

Thomas Sandor, chair of the CPL board, said the change will help people know exactly what the library is about.

"It is the board's hope that this change will restore the clarity, trust, and sense of purpose of the public library," he said.

The CPL board ratified the name change by unanimous vote.

The name Idea Exchange will be slowly phased out over the coming two years and is expected to be finalized before the 2026 opening of the new Cambridge Recreation Complex, which will house a library, located in southeast Cambridge.

The Idea Exchange website and library cards are to remain online and valid for the time being. Future changes will be communicated in advance to the public.
