On Wednesday, July 31, Cameron and Vanessa released a joint statement about their separation, only four days after their 22nd wedding anniversary,

"After 22 years of marriage, we have made the difficult decision to part ways," the General Hospital stars said. "We enter this new chapter with deep love, kindness, and respect for each other. We hold gratitude in our hearts for the wonderful years we shared together."

"Our children have been and will continue to be our highest priority, and we will forever share in our devotion and love for them,” their statement concluded.

The couple tied the knot on July 27, 2002, and have two kids together — son Lucas, born in April 2003, and daughter Leila, born in July 2006. Fans were speculating about their relationship in the days leading up to the divorce news after Cameron posted a series of images from the summer without Vanessa in them.

“Summer photo dump☺️,” Cameron captioned it. “Last few weeks before I’m an official empty nester😢.”

A couple of weeks earlier, he had shared memories from a trip to Arizona, where Vanessa was also not present.

“Magical trip through AZ so far with my two loves🥰,” the caption read. “This fall, Lucas is off to London for Foundation Program at Central St Martin fashion design and Leila is off to American University in Paris for psychology.”

“Every moment is so precious🙏🏼❤️,” it concluded.

Cameron recently opened up about issues he had in his marriage when he was on Dancing with the Stars in 2007. In June, he appeared on Cheryl Burke's Sex, Lies and Spray Tans podcast and revealed when he was asked to be a contestant on the competition show, he was worried about working with pro Edyta Śliwińska because she “didn’t wear a lot of clothes.”

"I called [the casting director] and I said, 'Listen, I'm so happy that you've offered me the show. I can't wait. I'm in. Just do me a favor. Put me with anybody but Edyta,'" he recalled. "Because I knew my wife and I, we were going through a little bit of a challenge at that time."

"I tried,” he later added. “I did everything in my power to make that as easy for [Vanessa] as possible, but it just is what it is. I mean, you can be married and do the show, obviously, but it can be, depending on the circumstances — it's just really hard.”
