Camilla Luddington is sharing what she hopes is next for her Grey's Anatomy character Jo Wilson after her surprise pregnancy was revealed in the season 20 finale.

During a conversation about her new podcast Call It What It Is with her former costar Jessica Capshaw, the 40-year-old actress  — who has starred as Jo since season 9 of the hit ABC medical drama — tells PEOPLE that her character is at a crossroads after hiding the pregnancy news from her boyfriend Dr. Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack).

“I don't know what she's going to do, but I know that what she needs to do is get up and go have a conversation with her partner, Link,” she says. “She's already blown off talking to him.”

She continues, “So, that's what I want for her. I want for her to have a nice, healthy conversation about what they're going to do together. But in true Grey's Anatomy fashion, will that happen until 10 episodes in? Who knows next season.”

The decision to keep her pregnancy from Link came after he revealed earlier in the season that he needed “some time” before expanding their family. Meanwhile, she was ready to have a baby with him, adding to their brood of her daughter Luna and his son, Scout, with Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone).

Despite her character’s current predicament, Luddington previously shared in PEOPLE’s Grey’s Anatomy special edition issue that she is proud of Jo’s journey on the series, which was renewed for a 21st season in April.

“When I joined the show, very quickly Jo was with Alex, and so she sort of came as this package deal for many seasons,” she said of her character’s relationship with pediatric surgeon Alex Karev (Justin Chambers).

Their relationship ultimately ended when Chambers left Grey’s Anatomy in 2019. Their storyline concluded with Alex leaving Jo and moving to Kansas to be with ex-wife Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl).

“Then we got to see who Jo was by herself and all the growth that she had to do,” Luddington explains. “Then becoming a mother by herself. I feel like it ended up empowering her as a character. That ends up being really exciting as an actor.”
