Canada Day: 5 things to do in Calgary

The City of Calgary promises a huge party on Wednesday. But apparently, this is just a warm-up for what's to come.

"All I can say is wait for the 150th anniversary of Canada. In two years' time we're going to have an even bigger celebration," said the city's manager of culture, Sarah Iley.

1. Chinatown Fest

Witness an attempt to set a record for the most people doing Tai Chi at the same time in Canada. The fun happens 3 to 10 p.m. Then head toward the Centre Street Bridge for fireworks around 10:45 p.m.

2. Pancake breakfasts

Fort Calgary has one at 10 a.m. and Heritage Park does also, but only for the first 2015 people through the gates before 10:30 a.m.— but keep in mind that regular admission applies. Stay at Hertiage Park for the Dominon Day Parade at 11 a.m. and mini-chuckwagon races at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on the rodeo grounds.

3. Food Truck Roundup

Refuel on Japanese, Greek and much more at Eau Claire between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m.

4. All-ages show

Head to the Harry Hayes building between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. for live music from Dear Rouge, Dan Mangan + Blacksmith and Stars.

5. Olympic Plaza

Harry the Horse, the official mascot of the Calgary Stampede, is turning 30. To celebrate, the Stampede is serving up 3,000 slices of birthday cake from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
