Canada’s far-right has organized anti-Trans protests across the country on September 20th.
They are protesting against teaching 2SLGBTQQIA+ inclusive content and discussing fundamental human rights of Queer and Trans folks in schools.
The far-right/right are experts at hiding bigotry behind the dog whistle that is "parental rights."
"Dog whistles" in politics refer to coded language. Politicians use dog whistles to communicate messages that appeal to particular constituents without alienating others
The complexity lies in the term's ability to be all things to all people, thereby enabling the politician to broaden their appeal while also activating a base that may have more exclusionary beliefs.
The far-right has been clinging to "parental rights" to justify their policies and beliefs. Their views can be perceived as anti-Queer and anti-Trans, especially when it comes to the school board level.
Let’s not beat around the bush: “parental rights” is a dog-whistle for being anti-human-rights.
These protests have been organized after several months of right-wing governments and leaders in Canada showing us where their values are, and they are clearly anti-human rights, anti-Queer and anti-Trans.
It is worth noting that (for now) we have the Liberals federally, NDP in BC, and Liberals in NL and Yukon. All the remaining provinces are led by right-wing governments.
Coordinated Hate and Division
Make no mistake - these protests are supported, funded, and attended by a wide umbrella of far-right and conspiratorial groups, including white Christian supremacists and other religious extremist groups, ‘Freedom’ Convoy enthusiasts, and anti-human-rights extremists who will stop at nothing to strip marginalized groups of our rights and oppress us further.
And tons of these vile protests are taking place by schools - directly putting children (including Trans, Queer, and cis-het kids) in danger of being exposed to harm, and disrupting their education a hell of a lot more than queer-inclusive Sex-ed would.
