There was a moment in Canada’s men’s hockey semifinal against Germany when it looked like Gilbert Brule might go down as a hero for his country.

After the Canucks found themselves in an inexplicable 3-0 hole, Brule got his team back in the game with a goal just under halfway through the the second period. Less than five minutes later, any talk of heroism was brought to an abrupt halt.

The 31-year-old KHLer took a run at David Wolf of Germany and delivered an inexcusable high hit at centre ice earning him a five-minute penalty and a game misconduct. The hit was deplorable for a number of reasons ranging from its recklessness to its stupidity, and it seems unlikely Brule will make another appearance at these Olympics.

One only hopes that Wolf comes out of the hit OK. he was able to return in the third period which is certainly a positive sign. At the very least, he’s certainly returning from PyeongChang with a medal. The same can’t be said of Brule.
