How Canadian NHL teams fared yesterday

All seven Canadian teams were in action on Saturday, including three head-to-head battles.

Senators shred Leafs

In another blowout on Hockey Day in Canada, the Ottawa Senators ran away with the game early to earn a convincing 6-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Curtis Lazar had two goals and captain Erik Karlsson added four assists on the night. Toronto goalie James Reimer had a night to forget as he was yanked in the opening frame for allowing three goals on eight shots.

Plekanec, Canadiens make statement

The beleaguered Montreal Canadiens ended their four-game losing streak in a big way with a 5-1 trouncing of the Edmonton Oilers.

Tomas Plekanec had a goal and three assists. Former Oiler Ben Scrivens stopped 23 shots, including a late attempt by Connor McDavid, for his first victory between the pipes for Montreal.

Flames heat up vs. Canucks

A pair of struggling western Canadian teams faced off in Vancouver with the visiting Calgary Flames coming away with a 4-1 victory.

Calgary's Michael Frolik had the only goal of the first two periods before Sean Monahan gave the Flames a two-goal cushion at 15:07 of the third period. Mikael Backlund and Sam Bennett bracketed the lone Canucks' marker by Emerson Etem with empty-net goals.

It was just the second win in six games for the Flames while the Canucks lost their fourth straight.

Bounce-back win for Jets

Drew Stafford scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lead the Winnipeg Jets past the Colorado Avalanche 4-2.

It was a good response for the Jets, who travelled to Colorado after losing to the Hurricanes at home the night before.
