Cap-Pelé seniors back in special-care home after flooding

Sixty seniors were happy to return to their special-care home in Cap-Pelé on Monday, after being forced out by flooding last month.

Many residents at Résidence Castel Des Flots Bleus left with just the clothes on their backs on Feb. 4.

Maria Landry remembers running from her room. Her husband, Gerard Landry, says they are pleased the entire ordeal is over.

"I wouldn't like to go through it again," he said. "It could be worse."

General manager, Charline Boudreau, says the flooding on all three floors of the building was caused by a rupture in the sprinkler system and the damage was mostly cosmetic and limited to the common areas.

That was a relief to the residents as they returned to their rooms.

"Everybody was happy to move in, you could see all their faces and feeling at home again, you could see a lot of relief, taken off their shoulders as soon as they walked through their doors," said Boudreau.

She credits committed contractors and members of the community with the fact that the repairs were completed months ahead of schedule.

"Everybody pulled together as a team, our little community stepped up to help out in any way they could," Boudreau said.

"We had everybody chipping in, so really it's overwhelmed me in all the people helping us and helping our residents to be in the most comfortable place … I'm extremely happy of how everything went down."

Residents stayed with family and friends or at a nearby special-care home while the repairs were being completed.
