Cape Breton lobster season starts on island's east coast

Lobster harvesters on the east coast of Cape Breton hit the water at first light Saturday for the start of their season.

It is trap setting day for an area stretching from Bay St. Lawrence to Gabarus. It's an area known as lobster fishing area 27 and about 500 licenses have been issued for the region.

The weather on Saturday morning was favourable with rain expected and winds gusting to 40 km/h by afternoon.

Earlier this month the season got underway in the west of Cape Breton and northern Inverness.

Harvesters there are reporting a relatively slow start because of colder waters and east winds.

Prices at the wharf are about $5.50 a pound.

The first catch from today's trap drop is expected wharfside on Monday.
