Captain John's boat restaurant will be towed away from Toronto

Captain John's restaurant, also known as the rusting ship M/V Jadran, is set to be towed away from its longtime Lake Ontario spot at the foot of Yonge Street on this morning.

The defunct floating restaurant — which at one point was a popular dining destination in the city — was sold to the Marine Recycling Corporation (MRC) earlier this month.

Ports Toronto said if the weather's good, tugboats will begin towing away the ship at 10 a.m., work that's set to continue until noon.

To remove the aging ship, MRC's tug boats will turn the Jadran around, then tow it through the Eastern Gap — a 200-metre wide waterway between Ward's Island and the Port Lands. The boat will then travel to MRC's facility in Port Colborne via the Welland Canal.

The boat has a colourful history, including its sinking in 1981 after it was struck by a Toronto ferry. It first filed for bankruptcy protection in 2002. John Letnik, who owned the former cruise ship, fell behind on rent and taxes in 2012, and it was shut down.
