Car ripped apart in Winnipeg crash
A 30-year-old Winnipeg man is in hospital following a two-car crash on Wednesday that was so violent, it tore one of the cars in half.
The cars collided on McGillivray Boulevard at Loudon Road, east of the Perimeter Highway, at about 7:30 a.m. CT Wednesday.
RCMP say the man, who was driving a 2004 Nissan Maxima, was taken to hospital. He was last reported to have non-life-threatening injuries as of Wednesday afternoon.
A 49-year-old woman from the Starbuck, Man., area who was driving a 2011 Volvo S80 was not injured, police said in a release.
McGillivray Boulevard was shut down to traffic for some time on Wednesday, as emergency crews worked at the scene.
The front end of a black car was visible in a ditch, with the rest of the vehicle resting by the side of the road.
Emergency crews had initially thought three vehicles were involved in the collision, but the third vehicle was in the ditch prior to the crash.
Many roads around Winnipeg were in miserable condition during the morning with blowing, drifting snow and icy areas.
Strong winds and falling temperatures polished the roads, leading to numerous crashes and vehicles spinning off into ditches.
A semi-trailer had also jackknifed and blocked traffic both ways on Sturgeon Road between Saskatchewan Avenue and Inkster Boulevard for about an hour.
Drivers were being urged to give themselves extra time to get around.
"Please drive with care," the provincial government posted on Twitter early Wednesday.
Crews are out plowing, sanding and salting.
The treacherous conditions were a continuation of the situation Tuesday, with several collisions reported throughout the afternoon and evening.
