Carleton Park excavation uncovers old stone foundation

It turns out Carleton Park holds a lot more than just grass and trees.

Construction crews working on the new Picaroons Brewery on Fredericton's northside unearthed what appears to be a very old stone foundation.

City of Fredericton spokesperson Wayne Knorr said the city has hired an archaeologist to monitor the excavation, which is necessary according to provincial legislation. Their job will be to identify and document any artifacts or findings.

Knorr said the city expects to have more information about what was found on the site next week, "but the preliminary interpretation is that these are the remnants of a 19th century residence."

Knorr says it's not uncommon for construction crews around the city to find antique bottles and plates, but this discovery "is cool."

Crews discovered the foundation in an area where an old railway roundhouse was in place, in what was an industrial area.

Knorr said crews will not have to stop work, but can work around the archeological site.
