Cats Reunited With Owners After Beirut Explosion

An animal welfare organization in Beirut, Lebanon, has reunited more than 100 pets with their owners following a deadly port explosion in the city on August 4.

Animals Lebanon shared multiple videos on its Instagram page of emotional reunions between pets and their owners who had been separated since the explosion. One woman cries as she holds her cat, saying, “Oh, my God. I’ve been looking everywhere.”

Animals Lebanon Executive Director Jason Mier told Storyful that it has been “an insanely difficult time” for the rescue volunteers with the organization, some of whom were themselves injured in the blast, according to the site.

So far, Animals Lebanon has reunited 110 pets affected by the explosion with their owners. Two hours after the blast, nearly 200 volunteers were working to rescue animals trapped in the rubble and have since provided veterinary and rehabilitative care for injured pets, according to the GoFundMe page set up to support the rescue efforts.
