Caught on camera: The shocking moment vandals destroy memorial to girl, seven, killed in bouncy castle accident

The shocking moment that a memorial to a seven-year-old schoolgirl who died in a bouncy castle accident was destroyed by vandals has been caught on camera.

CCTV footage shows four teenage boys brazenly vandalising a memorial to Summer Grant at her primary school, tipping over flower boxes, throwing bricks and drawing swear words in the school’s play area.

Summer died from serious injuries after a bouncy castle she was playing on in Harlow Town Park blew away in strong winds in March last year.

Staff at Valley Primary Academy in Norwich had created a garden in her memory but were left shocked when they found it damaged on Wednesday morning.

Headteacher Sara Bush said pupils and staff had been left “horrified” by the attack, and it was particularly hard for Summer’s family, as the memorial was dedicated to her love of flowers.

“I feel sick to the bottom of my stomach,” she said.

“We had an assembly to explain it to the children and it was the quietest assembly I have ever done, we are horrified.”

She said Summer’s death last year had affected the small school hugely, and the memorial had become a place for children to “take a moment”.

The attack, which saw the children’s play area at the school vandalised as well, is now being investigated by Norfolk Police.

Ms Bush added: “It was senseless destruction. I would like to speak to the boys, I think they got carried away and did not think about the impact it would have.”

A 24-year-old woman and a man, 27, who were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence in relation to Summer’s death have been released on bail until June 15.
