CBC Edmonton wins six regional RTDNA awards

CBC Edmonton has won six regional awards from the RTDNA, the organization which represents broadcast journalists in Canada.

"These awards recognize the hard work that goes into the diversity of story telling at CBC Edmonton. (I'm) incredibly proud of all who work here for public broadcasting," said Gary Cunliffe, the station's managing editor.

Veteran reporter James Hees won the radio long-feature award for his touching story of the reunion of a mother and a long lost son in Heart's Desire, Newfoundland.

The CBC Edmonton newsroom won best radio newscast for its coverage of a murderous spree on Dec. 30, 2014 which left nine people dead in three separate locations in Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan.

Radio Active, CBC Edmonton's afternoon radio current affairs show, won the best live special events award for its broadcast from the Edmonton Folk Fest.

CBC Investigates, the investigative unit of CBC Edmonton, swept all three investigative categories — digital, radio and TV — for "Aura of Power," their series of stories which exposed the personal and political abuse of public resources by former premier Alison Redford.

Earlier this week, the investigative unit - comprised of reporters Charles Rusnell and Jennie Russell - won a prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Aura of Power.

The regional winners now compete for the national RTDNA awards, which will be presented in Toronto in June. In 2014, CBC Edmonton won four national RTNDA awards, including both the radio and TV investigative categories.

CBC Calgary made a similarly strong showing at the awards, taking home six RTDNA awards of their own for online and radio.

The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) awards are the most prestigious broadcast awards for journalists working in the industry in Canada.
