CBC NL wins RTDNA awards for Bay de Verde fire coverage, Beaumont Hamel 100th

CBC Newfoundland and Labrador took home awards Saturday night for coverage of a fish plant fire and the 100th anniversary of Beaumont Hamel, as well as a lifetime achievement award for Here & Now anchor Debbie Cooper.

The Radio Television Digital News Association handed out its 2017 Atlantic Region Awards on Saturday in Dartmouth, N.S., with CBC Newfoundland and Labrador winning in two categories.

Our story on the April 2016 Bay de Verde fish plant fire garnered the Charlie Edwards Award for television spot news.

Journalist Terry Roberts and videographer Eddy Kennedy, as well as crew Teddy Dillon, Cal Tobin and Sherry Vivian, covered the many stories of a fishing community that was devastated by a fire that ravaged its fish plant, the area's economic mainstay.

Our live coverage on the 100th anniversary of Beaumont Hamel was also recognized, and CBC NL won the Gord Sinclair Award for live special events in the television category.

For five consecutive hours on July 1, 2016, CBC News Network's Heather Hiscox and the St. John's Morning Show's Anthony Germain hosted special multi-platform coverage of the anniversary.

Cooper was also presented with an RTDNA Lifetime Achievement Award, and was recognized for her 30-plus years in television and radio broadcasting.

Cooper, who has co-anchored Here & Now for 27 years, has conducted thousands of interviews, including with every Newfoundland and Labrador premier since Brian Peckford.

RTDNA Canada Awards honour the best journalists, programs, stations and news gathering organizations in radio, television and digital.
