CCWN receives $3000 food donation from Casablanca Hotel

The shelves at Community Care West Niagara (CCWN) will be a little fuller thanks to a sizable food donation from the Casablanca Hotel.

The hotel donated around $3,000 in overstocked food to the food bank, which serves Grimsby and the communities of west Niagara.

Casablanca Hotel general manager Murray Lathem said the donation came about as a way to put their surplus inventory into good hands.

“We had an overstock of inventory, and it is coming to the end of year. Considering COVID-19 and the business environment, we thought it would be best to find a way for the food not to go to waste.”

Lynda O’Donnell, administration and fundraising co-ordinator for CCWN, was there at the hotel to receive the donation Oct. 30.

She said one the donation is significant for the food bank not only in terms of size, but also in terms of variety.

“There are quite a few different seafood items, there is coconut milk, sauces, rice. It is a very big variety and that is good for us.”

With the ongoing pandemic continuing to impact many local families across west Niagara with CERB benefits coming to an end, O’Donnell said CCWN has already seen their numbers begin to increase, making the timing of the Casablanca Hotel’s donation even more of an impact.

“We are starting to see many new clients who had never been to a food bank, and that is very hard for them. The more food they can take, the more they can use money to pay their rent, or buying items for their children.”

According to Lathem, the partnership between Casablanca Hotel and CCWN was a natural partnership.

“No better way than to do this at a time like this, when so many people are struggling. Supporting the community any way we can is what this hotel is all about, and that is what we are doing.”

While CCWN does run an annual fall food drive for non-perishable items — a campaign that is one of their largest of the year and often supplies much of the food banks donations for the year — O’Donnell said the $3000 donation from Casablanca Hotel will make a significant impact to the community, and the families who rely on CCWN for support.

“This is a huge donation for us. It is a large donation in terms of size, and there are lots of different items, so this really helps the people who need it most.”
