Centre County officials unveil new sign for the renamed State College Regional Airport

University Park Airport has officially been renamed State College Regional Airport and local officials unveiled the new name and sign on Friday.

Penn State and the Centre County Airport Authority announced the change earlier this week, saying it was aimed in part at reducing confusion among flyers.

The airline city code that is printed on boarding passes and luggage tags has been “SCE” since commercial air service began at the airport, dating back to 1978. Behind the scenes, pilots and air traffic controllers used the Federal Aviation Administration-recognized “UNV.”

The university — which owns the airport — and the airport authority believe the name change will also better reflect the airport’s service area, the investment in the economic development of the county and the available transportation options.

“What you see today is a culmination of an effort made by many local entities, resulting in a new name that associates this facility with our entire region rather than just limiting it to the university,” Chris Groshel, Centre County Airport Authority board chair, said at Friday’s event.
