Châteauguay blames brown tap water on overconsumption

The City of Châteauguay is asking people to conserve their water use after a number of residents reported brownish water coming out of the taps this weekend.

Mayor Nathalie Simon said a sudden influx of water use prompted by the warm weather put an extra strain on the city's filtration system.

"Everybody I guess were very happy to start their pools, clear their cars, wash their driveway so the water demand was twice the demand we have on normal days," Simon said.

Simon said work crews fixed the filtration problem overnight and the water is not dangerous to drink. Although, she said, residents should make sure the water is clear before drinking it or using it for laundry.

She said if the water stained anyone's clothing, the city can provide a special product to help remove the rust colour.

While the problem is fixed for now, the city is asking residents to stay prudent with their water use.
