They Are the Champions! Bohemian Rhapsody Surpasses $1 Billion at the Worldwide Box Office
Bohemian Rhapsody is soaring to new heights!
The musical biopic based on the career trajectory of Queen and frontman Freddie Mercury has surpassed the $1 billion mark with $1,088,018,915 at the worldwide box office as of April 14, according to IMDb Pro.
The Oscar-winning film starring Rami Malek and Lucy Boynton has also earned over $200 million in the U.S. box office. The film continues to play in China and has become a hit with Japanese audiences, earning $114 million, according to Variety.
Bohemian Rhapsody also resonated with Academy voters, helping the film score four Oscars out of its five nominations, including a Best Actor Oscar for Malek, 37.
The film has become the fourth biggest movie distributed by Twentieth Century Fox after James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic, and Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, Variety reported.
The movie, which has become the highest-grossing music biopic of all time, tells the story of Queen lead singer Mercury, and the band’s rise to fame.
To secure the title, the Mr. Robot star, 37, studied Mercury’s life and mannerisms very closely, he previously told Entertainment Weekly.
“I would consistently go back to his interviews and performances just to understand the [different] sides of him,” Malek said. “Obviously, there is a very brave, brash entertainer who hits the stage. And then there is a human being who can be reclusive and lonely behind closed doors.”
