Forcible confinement charge against driver in accident that paralyzed Morgan Pardy

A Conception Bay South man charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm to a young woman has now also been charged with forcibly confining her.

Joshua Steele-Young, 21, is alleged to have been driving a car that flipped over on Pitts Memorial Highway on March 20.

Morgan Pardy, 21, was a passenger in the Honda Civic. She was ejected from the vehicle and has injuries that left her partially paralyzed.

It now appears she may not have been a willing passenger.

The new charge against Steele-Young reads that he "did without lawful authority confine, imprison or forcibly seize Morgan Pardy."

Steele-Young has been arrested and is now in custody. He is also facing several other new charges.

He was under court orders to stay away from or have no contact with Pardy and two other women.

Steele-Young is accused of breaching the orders on June 24 and 25, and July 16.

Pardy's mother, Sharon Stamp, told CBC Friday that Steele-Young did contact her daughter, but Stamp didn't want to get into details because the matter is before the court.

Because of the breaches, Steele-Young is also charged with failing to keep the peace.

Stamp also told CBC that her daughter was released from hospital on Tuesday, just six days before her 22nd birthday.

"Emotionally, she has her ups and downs," said Stamp. "But for the most part is in good spirits."

Stamp said her daughter is paralyzed from the chest down, but has the use of her arms and limited use of her hands.

Steele-Young was slated to have a bail hearing Friday at provincial court in St. John's but it was rescheduled for Monday.
