Charlie Donevan celebrates 98th birthday

·1 min read

It was a birthday celebration fitted for a king – or, at least for someone as beloved in his own community as Charlie Donevan of Donevan’s Hardware is.

Decked out in a black suit, white dress shirt, a tie and black top hat, Donevan sat in a carriage on King Street, surrounded by friends and family and local delegates on Sunday, July 31 to celebrate his 98th birthday.

Donevan held up a cake for photos – the cake portrayed Donevan wearing his traditional Beaver-skin top hat and sitting in a rowboat that sits on a railway flat car – like one of the paintings that made up Gananoque’s Canada 150 salute.

At the same time a birthday celebration was had for Donevan, one was also held for the store itself, which recently re-opened and turned 150 years old.

Those in attendance, some of which were in period costumes, were able to take in some tasty birthday cake and refreshments.
