Two pieces of famous Babe Ruth memorabilia are likely to fetch more than a million dollars at auction this week — and now their famous owner has been revealed.
It’s actor and noted baseball fan Charlie Sheen, who is selling two Ruth artifacts: His 1927 World Series ring and an original copy of the sales agreement from when Ruth was sold to the New York Yankees from the Boston Red Sox. Sheen outed himself as the seller to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, a move that should raise the profile of the items even further in their final days on the market.
Sheen told Rovell he wasn’t too concerned with how much they sell for, because he stands to make a profit, but doesn’t know exactly how much:
“I’ve enjoyed these incredible items for more than two decades and the time has come,” said the actor who famously played pitcher Rick Vaughn in the “Major League” movies. “Whatever price it brings is gravy.”
The items were purchased in the early ’90s, and Sheen said he displayed them in a bar area in his house that he named after the slugger. Sheen said he doesn’t remember what he paid for the Ruth items — they were sold to him by Josh Evans of Lelands, who is now selling them for Sheen — but he said he will certainly come away with a profit.
Sheen kept most of his memorabilia, including the two Ruth items, in pristine condition, framing them in meticulous fashion in what he says was better than what he saw at the Baseball Hall of Fame.
In its auction description, Lelands calls the Ruth ring “Baseball’s true Holy Grail,” citing the fact that it’s never been sold publicly (Sheen brought it in a privately brokered deal) and it’s a 14-carat gold ring bestowed on the best player on arguably baseball’s best team ever.
The bill of sale for Ruth is one of two — one belonged to the Yankees; the other to the Red Sox. This is the Yankees’ copy. The Red Sox’s copy most recently sold for $996,000 in 2004.
More than a specific dollar amount in the auction, Sheen said he’s hoping the items land with a collector who appreciates them as much as he did.
