Charlottetown hosts Victoria Park boardwalk winter walking event

The City of Charlottetown invited residents to enjoy the newly renovated Victoria Park boardwalk Sunday as part of a series of events to keep residents active in the winter.

The city's parks and recreation department's 2016 Winter Active campaign includes free activities throughout the season, including snowshoeing, skating, a learn-to-run program and the Victoria Park walk.

"I love it. I love it. And I usually walk it pretty much every day anyway," said Marlene MacDonald. "And I find they sand it, so it's great. It's better than the sidewalk sometimes."

Coun. Mitch Tweel said the city is looking at activities that can be promoted during all four seasons.

"It just doesn't have to be during the summer months. I mean, the winter time is an excellent, excellent opportunity to utilize the facilities here in this city and this is a prime example."

An estimated 1,000 people turned out for Sunday's event.

The boardwalk reopened in early December after an $800,000 upgrade.

"It's so much more solid that the other one was," said Charlene Morrison.

"I used to walk it and it was spongy and the nails were all starting to come up through and I've tripped a couple times. It's a lot wider too than it used to be."

An official celebration for the new boardwalk will take place in the spring.
