This Charming Bahamas Beach Cottage Is for Sale

If you’ve ever wanted to own a home straight from the pages of Coastal Living, now’s your chance: One of our favorite cottages ever is for sale, and we’re falling in love with this sweet Bahamas renovation all over again.

You may recognize this blue-shuttered escape from the pages of our September 2015 issue, when our writer spoke with one of the owners about how she and her husband revived and updated this falling-apart 19th-century house on Harbour Island and gave it its new name: Jewelbox. Read all about the renovation and see the before and after pictures here.

Now that the updated house is for sale, take another look at this colonial cottage, this time as a potential dream Bahamas escape you can purchase.

From the kitchen to the bathrooms to the charming addition of a guest house, the house was carefully renovated and reconstructed in 2013, but it still has the architectural touches of a classic Bahamas cottage. During reconstruction, the owners used new and repurposed wood, and they added touches like mahogany windows and doors and cedar shiplap siding on the interiors. The cheerful blue shutters on the exterior are a good touch, too! For more tips on how to restore an old beach cottage like this one, read our Homes Editor’s take on the updates made to this house.

Jewelbox has three bedrooms and three bathrooms; one of each resides in the adjoining guest cottage, added by the current owners, which has a more modern feel than the main house. The vintage Bahamas style of the main house gives it a lived-in, homey feel, and original materials maintain its heritage. Reclaimed heart pine floors in the living room—and throughout the house—are just like those used when it was originally built in 1800.

The new kitchen has the same layout as the original; to save space, the owners installed smaller-than-average appliances. High ceilings and a fresh, bright paint color keep the kitchen from feeling cramped, and doors at the end of the narrow space can be opened to let in plenty of ocean breezes and sunlight. The outdoor living room can double as a napping porch; its louvered walls make it feel like a separate room when closed but let in cool breezes when open.

Outdoor living spaces include a dining room and a sitting area, to make the most of the sunny Bahamas weather.

This cottage is 1,850 square feet, which includes the added-on guesthouse. An open-air dining room and sitting area both keep the interior from being cramped and bring extra opportunities to enjoy the fresh air to this house. A shower on the side of the building, added in the 2013 update, offers another spot to enjoy the great outdoors.

The property is listed by Vanessa Ansell of Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty for $1,650,000. It’s offered furnished, with the exception of a few pieces. You can see the full listing here.
