Chelsea Clinton defends fellow first child Barron Trump: He 'deserves to be left alone'

While former President George H.W. Bush’s funeral last week made it clear that there’s no love lost between President Trump and Bill and Hillary Clinton, the same isn’t necessarily true of their children. Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton tweeted support for current first son Barron Trump on Monday, insisting that the 12-year-old shouldn’t be included in the narrative surrounding his famous dad.

The 38-year-old Clinton, who was herself mocked as a youngster during her father’s presidency, bristled at a writer’s tweet joking that Barron should fill his dad’s chief of staff vacancy. Clinton leaped to the boy’s defense and admonished those mocking him.

She also stood up to a since-deleted tweet arguing that Barron was fair game given the Trump administration’s treatment of migrant children. Clinton disagreed, saying such scandals did not involve the preteen.

Although Clinton has distanced herself from former friend Ivanka Trump since the heated 2016 election, she’s been protective of the younger members of the Trump family. In March she called for Donald Trump Jr.’s five children to have their privacy respected after news broke about their parents’ divorce. In October, she slammed a cartoon dragging the young daughters of newly minted Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh into the controversy surrounding allegations of sexual assault against him.

“They do not belong in your cartoons, ‘jokes,’ or skits,” she tweeted. “If you can’t make your point about Judge Kavanaugh, whatever it may be, without bullying his kids, it’s not worth making.”

Clinton’s statements have been praised for promoting decency over politics. Still, don’t go expecting the Clintons to resurface on the White House Christmas-card list just yet.
