Chelsea Handler's Go-To Late-Night Snack Is A Carton Of Blueberries

From Women's Health

Chelsea Handler, 45, knows how to get big laughs. She’s joked her way to her own late-night talk show, stand-up comedy specials, six bestselling books, and more—all of which brim with her quick wit.

The jokes—and vodka and LaCroix!—are still flowing, but Chelsea is taking a more serious approach to her health these days. For her, that effort includes regular workouts with her trainer Ben Bruno, a newfound meditation practice, and a healthier diet.

The result? Well, take a look at any of the pics of her super strong, naked bod on the 'gram, and it's safe to say Chelsea is feeling good.

A big part of that is fueling herself in a way that feels energizing. "I eat every three to four hours," Chelsea tells Women’s Health. "I always make sure I have something every three to four hours because a nutritionist once taught me it's the best way to control your blood sugar levels."

With this approach, Chelsea enjoys her favorite foods while maintaining balance. "I think when you consistently feed your body, you have less of an inclination to [pig out]," she explains. "I like to eat light and I don't overdo it now. When I'm eating, I take my time and pay attention to when I'm full."

Sounds like you really can have it all, doesn't it? Here's what Chelsea Handler eats in a typical day.

Breakfast

Chelsea's internal clock is always on-schedule and wakes her up bright and early. "I wake up at 6 a.m.," she says. "It doesn't matter what country or what state or what timezone I'm in, I always wake up at six exactly. My biorhythm knows that it's 6 a.m. somewhere, just like it knows it's five o'clock somewhere when I need to start drinking."

Chelsea doesn't eat breakfast right away, though. "I usually have fresh celery juice first thing in the morning and don't eat anything for a few hours." Sometimes, she opts for lower-sugar OJ instead.

For Chelsea, this approach is a not-so-formal way to practice intermittent fasting. "I try and go for as long as I can without eating in the morning," she explains. Once a week, though, she takes the fasting next level and waits until 3 or 4 p.m for her first meal.

Most days, Chelsea follows her juice with a workout, and then breakfast. "I usually work out from 8 to 9, and then eat after," she says.

"I have scrambled egg whites with avocado, and then that really old-school grated Parmesan cheese that you get in those little plastic containers and scoop out," she says. "I douse my egg whites in Parmesan cheese because that is my favorite flavor in the world." She also adds garlic, onion, and hot pepper to season her breakfast.

One thing you won't find on her table: a salt shaker. "I never put salt on anything really," she says.

With her morning meal (and throughout the rest of the day), Chelsea also sips on some infused H2O. "I have water in my fridge that has lemon, lime, and cucumber," she says. "I'm not a fan of water, so in order to drink it I have to doctor it up. I have to add stuff to make it palatable and it has to be ice-cold; everything I drink has to be ice-cold."

Lunch

Chelsea is a creature of habit, and her lunch is quite predictable. "If I'm in LA, I go to my favorite restaurant, Blue Plate Oysterette in Santa Monica, and I get a dozen oysters," she says. "Those grilled oysters are my favorite thing in Los Angeles." (Seriously, she goes there up to three times a week.) On the side, she goes for something steamed and green. "I'm into greens and broccoli and Brussels sprouts over kale," she explains. "I try and have something green every day."

Lunch at home is much simpler. "I will have turkey wrapped up with a bunch of iceberg lettuce, a lot of avocado, some mustard, and some light, organic mayo," she says. Otherwise, she makes salads with arugula and Parmesan. "I like it crispy and dry with little wisps of parmesan everywhere."

Snack

Chelsea sometimes munches on salad in the afternoons, but they're not her only go-to. "I like chocolate, so I usually have a trail mix that has some chocolate and peanuts in it, or I'll have some chocolate-covered blueberries," she says. "I'll have a couple handfuls of that throughout the day." (She's a dark chocolate kinda gal, btw.)

Drinks

When 5 p.m. rolls around, Chelsea gravitates toward a skinny margarita. Her fave flavors are blood orange or grapefruit. Sometimes, though, she opts for a vodka with either a splash of cranberry juice or a lime LaCroix.

Dinner

Soon after, Chelsea is ready for dinner. "If I'm home and not going out, I make something for myself like turkey meatballs," she says. In fact, they're one of the mainstays in Chelsea's fridge. "There are like five stock items in my fridge at all times: sliced turkey, turkey meatballs (which I love to heat up with tomato sauce), Parmesan, arugula, and vegetarian chicken nuggets," she says. "I'm a 45-year-old who's still addicted to chicken nuggets." At least they're plant-based!

When Chelsea dines out, she usually orders fish. Branzino or black cod are two of her favorites. She's also a sushi fan. "I went overboard on salmon a couple years ago, though, so I'm kind of grossed out by salmon now," she says.

Generally, she tries to keep her dinners light. "I don't like heavy foods, like pasta with cream sauce, the way I used to, she says. "I just don't like the way I feel after. I stay away from heavy rice and gluten and anything like that."

That doesn't mean she totally shuns carbs, though. "If I'm at a really good restaurant and they have incredible pasta, I'll totally have it, but I try not to do that on a regular basis," she explains.

Nighttime Snack

Dinner isn't typically Chelsea's final meal of the day. "I usually like to late-night snack," Chelsea tells WH. "For me, it's usually blueberries. I'm obsessed with blueberries and, when they're out of season, I'm bummed." She also loves blackberries and pomegranates.

Though more typical late-night eats still tempt Chelsea, changing up her mindset about food has been huge. "I changed my whole philosophy about food," she says. "It's there to serve me and help me function." Hence the bloobs!

But she's not super-strict about it. Sometimes, she caps off the night with a nice dark chocolate bar.
