Boy seriously injured in 8-storey plunge

A seven-year-old boy is in hospital after falling from an eighth floor window of a highrise apartment building near Wilson Avenue and Keele Street.

The boy's injuries are serious but not considered life-threatening, according to Sgt. Claudio Martelluzzi of Toronto Police Service.

"Fortunately it appears the ground was saturated and broke some of his fall," Martelluzzi told reporters.

Emergency crews were called to 1130 Wilson Ave. in the city's north end shortly before 7 p.m.

Eight children were attending a party in one of the apartments, under the supervision of several adults, according to Martelluzzi. While the children were playing, the boy went into a bedroom by himself and fell from a window.

He suffered broken bones but was conscious as emergency crews arrived and rushed him to Sick Kids hospital, where he remains in treatment.

"The only time he stopped talking — a good sign — was when he was taking a breath," Martelluzzi said.

His mother was not at the party but arrived shortly after the incident, Martelluzzi said.

An investigation is underway.
