Yellowknife RCMP are reminding locals to be safe when outside enjoying the spring weather after a child was briefly lost on Back Bay Wednesday evening.
According to the release, police received a call at 8:40 p.m. Wednesday evening stating that a 7-year-old child disappeared from their parent's line of vision while skating on Back Bay.
Volunteers and the RCMP detachment immediately began a search. Police dispatched two snowmobiles as well as a drone to assist.
The child was located by a volunteer at approximately 9:20 p.m., safe and unharmed, but "some distance away from the last known location," according to the release.
"This event reminds us of how quickly situations can change, especially in the warming temperatures by day and challenging conditions of our ice and snow packed lakes," said RCMP spokesperson Marie-York Condon.
"The RCMP reminds all citizens to be aware of their surroundings and those of their loved ones and take care when adventuring outdoors."
