Chipotle using avocado pits from its popular guacamole for new clothing, accessory line

Chipotle Mexican Grill has found a use for the pits from the 300 million avocados used in its guacamole.

Instead of trashing the pits, they are now being used to dye the company’s new limited-edition Chipotle Goods clothing and accessories line that launches Tuesday the fast-casual chain announced.

"We know people are looking to celebrate their passion for Chipotle, and we set out to create a line of products with the same thoughtfulness, care, and attention to detail that we use in our kitchens," Chris Brandt, Chipotle chief marketing officer, said in a news release Monday. "With Chipotle Goods, our fans can get quality items that support sustainable agriculture and represent our mission of cultivating a better world."

The gender neutral collection includes: avocado dyed shirts and tote bags, custom order shirts "where fans can customize their go-to Chipotle order ingredient by ingredient," avocado lined jean jackets, sweatshirts, hats, baby onesies, leggings, reusable lunch bags and more.

According to Chipotle, the leftover pits from select restaurants will be "upcycled" to create several "natural avo dyed goods." The pits are simmered in water to create the plant-based dye, which varies in color.

"Each unique piece from the avo dyed collection requires five avocado pits, equivalent to five orders of guac, depending upon the season and size of the fruit," Chipotle said in the release.

Chipotle Rewards members can access the collection Monday with a special password sent in email. The line will be available to the public starting Tuesday at www.chipotlegoods.com.

In June, Chipotle launched mobile ordering through Facebook Messenger and group ordering.
