CIBC leaves historic Walkerville building

The CIBC ceased operations in an historic building in Walkerville Friday and is moving to a location on Ottawa Street.

Clients popping into the bank Friday said they will miss handling their finances in the building that was built on Devonshire Road more than a century ago by famed Detroit architect Albert Kahn.

CIBC will be setting up shop on Ottawa Street at Moy Avenue. There is no confirmation about what will happen with the original bank building on Devonshire.

"I'm kind of disappointed," said Kathleen Hart. "It's a beautiful building, so it's a treat to come and do my banking."

Client Louis Simpraga hopes the building is preserved and has a new tenant soon.

"Unfortunately, it's a (sign of) the times," he said. "Older buildings like this ... is strictly for the big, main branches."
