Cinema Returns to Kashmir for First Time in Over Two Decades
Cinema has returned to the Indian region of Kashmir for the first time in over two decades, with the inauguration of a first multiplex theater on September 20 in the city of Srinagar.
“Today, we are trying to bring back the lost era,” Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha was quoted as saying by the Times of India, which said smaller cinemas were planned for districts across Kashmir. Sinha said on Twitter he had already inaugurated two such theaters, in Pulwama and Shopian.
Local cinemas were shut down in the 1990s due to the separatist insurgency.
