City Hall Is 'Mocking God': San Francisco Catholic Archbishop Dismisses Virus Restrictions
San Francisco’s Catholic archbishop, Salvatore Cordileone, on Sunday, September 20, described restrictions on worship due to the coronavirus as a mockery.
Cordileone was speaking on the steps of the Cathedral of St Mary of the Assumption, addressing a small, socially distanced crowd. He accused city officials of minimizing the needs of worshippers and putting Catholics “at the back of the line.”
“To city hall, you don’t matter,” Cordileone told the crowd. “One person at a time inside this great cathedral to pray? What an insult. This is a mockery. They are mocking you and even worse, they are mocking God.”
The city has restrictions in place on religious services indoors, though local reports say Mayor London Breed’s office has indicated indoor services could be allowed by the end of September at 25 percent capacity.
