City ice rinks open this weekend

Another sign that winter is upon us arrives this weekend with the opening of the city's ice rinks.

Thirty-five of the city's outdoor rinks — including those at Nathan Phillips Square, Greenwood Park and Colonel Samuel Smith Park — open on Saturday and, weather permitting, will operate until the middle of March.

The remaining 15 rinks will be open from Dec. 5 to the end of February.

"It may not feel like winter is fully on us yet but I think this a great way to embrace winter and get out and carry on the tradition," said Matthew Cutler of the city's Parks, Forestry and Recreation Department.

Saturday also marks the start of the Cavalcade of Lights at Nathan Phillips Square.

The city's skating programs include hockey skills, power skating and learn-to-skate lessons for kids and adults.

Helmets are mandatory for children under six and anyone taking part in shinny hockey or learn-to-skate.
