CKLB to hold AGM in Yellowknife today

The non-profit society that oversees the troubled CKLB radio is holding its annual general meeting in Yellowknife today.

The Native Communications Society of the N.W.T.`s main job is to oversee the operation of CKLB, a radio station that bills itself as "The Voice of Denendeh."

The station used to broadcast news and aboriginal language programming to communities throughout the territory.

Last August, managers laid off the staff who produced and delivered that programming, citing government funding delays and a shortage of funding for the layoffs.

Since then, CKLB has broadcast a steady stream of pre-programmed country music.

The Native Communications Society has received more than half a million dollars in funding for the radio station since the layoffs, but has yet to hire back any of the staff.

The meeting is being held at the Explorer Hotel.
